Instinct AI is a personal AI agent from San Francisco that works without an interface of its own: you text it on iMessage or WhatsApp or call it, and it handles reservations, bookings, cancellations or government forms itself, by operating a browser and a phone the way a human would. Access is invite-only, and nothing is charged during the beta.

What Instinct AI is

Behind Instinct is Spear Street Technology, registered in April 2026 and led by Noah Shinn, 23, previously a research scientist at Sierra and first author of the Reflexion paper (NeurIPS 2023), in which agents learn from their own mistakes. In his introduction post, Shinn describes the principle: “There are no new interfaces. You can text or call it. It’s trained to use a phone and a computer in the same way that humans do.”

Technically, every user gets a persistent computer in the provider’s cloud, with a browser, stored logins and the ability to keep working between two messages. There is a single continuous thread, no projects and no workspaces. The company does not say which language models run underneath. According to The Information, Instinct has more than 100,000 users as of September 2026, and compute capacity is already running short.

The early-access examples are unspectacular, and that is exactly what makes them interesting: a haircut appointment in a foreign city, where the agent emails the salon after the online booking fails and reports the confirmation hours later; a restaurant table with a card on file for the no-show hold; a visa on arrival for Indonesia, for which Instinct compiles the passport photo, the accommodation address and the list of recently visited countries from emails and Airbnb receipts and delivers the PDF at the end. None of these tasks is big. Taken together, they add up to hours a week.

What the reports say

The coverage falls into three waves. The first was enthusiasm: from mid-August 2026, reports of rebooked flights, cancelled subscriptions and concert tickets bought circulated on X. The second was criticism. On 24 August, TechCrunch collected the findings of early testers: Peter Yang found his emails indexed and stored, “not cool to index and retain my emails without my permission”, and Katie Jacobs Stanton of Moxxie Ventures reported that the agent had sent an email on her behalf without asking: “it had broken my trust.” Two days later, the Wall Street Journal and TechCrunch reported a 250 million dollar Series B at a 2.5 billion dollar valuation, led by Index Ventures and Benchmark.

The third wave is the valuation. On 15 September, The Information reported that Spear Street Technology is negotiating another billion at around 10 billion dollars, with Sequoia and Benchmark. The same report says Shinn would rather not charge users and is considering advertising. On 16 September, phone calls, own email addresses and the Trusted Person Network were added, on the same day that Meta taught its agent Muse, launched on 8 September, to make calls as well. Muse is US-only, with plans from 0 to 100 dollars a month; the open-source alternatives OpenClaw and Hermes Agent run on your own server and require setup and operations accordingly. Instinct sits right in between: as simple as an app from Meta, but without an app.

Privacy: the open flank

The terms of service grant Instinct a perpetual, irrevocable licence to use uploaded content for training models. The vault and data from the Google Workspace interface are excluded, and an opt-out only applies going forward. Under the terms, the agent may enter into agreements on the user’s behalf and can capture screen, cursor and keyboard input. Claire Vo documented what that means in practice: she disconnected her Google account at 11 a.m. and still received a summary of her emails at noon, because they were stored in plain text. Instinct then added a delete control and revised its terms on 26 August; since then, disconnecting a service explicitly does not delete the data by itself.

For companies in Germany and the EU this is a clear line. Instinct is a US provider with no statements on GDPR, data processing agreements or data location. Anyone connecting a company mailbox transfers, by the wording of the terms, rights to business data that cannot easily be reclaimed. As a personal assistant with a virtual card with a daily limit and a separate mailbox, the risk is manageable. As a tool for customer data, it is not.

Is this the end of automation?

The question is obvious. If an agent fills in forms, makes phone calls and operates software without an interface, every automation built today with n8n or Make looks like a detour. Three things about Instinct really are here to stay: the interface disappears, the agent operates software as it is, even without an API, and agents are starting to coordinate with each other.

Still, that does not replace process automation, for three reasons. First, Instinct is built for personal life. A haircut appointment can take ten minutes longer and a reservation can go wrong; an invoice approval or a customer import cannot. Companies need repeatability, traceability and a permissions model, and that is exactly what an agent working silently in the background for a quarter of an hour does not provide. Second, the data: a perpetual training licence on everything the agent sees is incompatible with customer data under the GDPR. Third, the economics: an agent that runs its own computer with a browser for every task is many times more expensive than a workflow that completes the same task with three API calls. That capacity is already tight at 100,000 free users makes the point.

What changes is the level. Automation does not stop, it moves up one layer. Fixed workflows keep handling the structured and repeatable, and agents take over the fuzzy last mile: the phone call to the supplier, the form on the government website, the legacy software without an interface. The right response is not to restrict the agent but to limit its blast radius, with budgets, approval points, your own data and logs. So it is not the end of automation, but it is the end of the idea that automation stops at the API.

What this means for your company

An agent only helps with tasks that can be explained in a message. If you cannot describe your workflows, you cannot delegate them, neither to software nor to people. Next comes the question of which data an agent may see and which it never may, and that comes before the first connector. Only then is it worth looking at tools: fixed workflows where processes are clear, agents with guardrails where they are not.
